CASSATA
The time had come to open the drawer and face what lay inside. For twenty-two years I thought about Cassata, the book that never got made.
The Summer of Hope had ended, and with it the hope of a child. The hushed-up book had been given a name and, in the dark, survived. Photographs pinned to pages: rooms of a Florentine palazzo, a river, a reptile … love. An ice-cream dessert melting, like the part of me that died. Facts whispered from a distance. Words sparse, yet true. Wrapped within them a story only my body knew.
